Modernize with Minimalism – PART II
“Minimalism is not a lack of something. It’s simply the perfect amount of something.”
-Nicholas Burroughs
Minimalism is generally thought of as living with bare minimum stuff. But there is no particular rule that we follow. We may have certain things in our wish list that we possess or that we may want to have.
Once in a while, it’s essential to open our wardrobe/ kitchen cabinets to find the old unused stuff that has been lying there for years which can be donated or sold unless it has a specific purpose. Sometimes buying less with good quality that lasts longer makes more sense. That’s what sustainability is all about.
MINIMALIST BEDROOM
A minimalist master bedroom can be achieved by sticking to symmetry, clean lines and simple silhouettes. Focusing on a neutral colour palette; white, ivory or beige or colored greys make the space feel light and open.
Natural light, as much as possible – french windows or low sill windows could be the main feature of your abode.
Soft artificial lighting with a contemporary floor lamp or indirect cove lighting can enhance the bedroom interiors. Sleek reading lamps, attached to the wall on either one or both sides can help declutter the side tables.
A Chest of drawers is yet another piece of furniture that can store your belongings and the top could be utilised for necessary daily personal things. Floor to ceiling designed wardrobe/ closet with slender handles or grooves (in-built handles) give an extra clean look.
Tips:
- Texture can be used on walls/ linens/ flooring to add character to the neutral colour tones.(please refer to THE INDISPENSABLES – Textures & Patterns ! for more details)
- A throw or pillows onto the bed, jute baskets for storage or hammered metal accents, such as bowls or vases, elevate the space keeping it simple yet stylish.
- A small mat / rug at the bedside can be functional in providing warmth against the cold floor esp. in colder climates and add texture to the plain flooring.
MINIMALIST STUDY ROOM/ HOME OFFICE
Simple, straight lines create a tidy appearance. Generally a neutral colour palette is chosen for the minimalistic look but sometimes a pop colour in essential accessories such as a study lamp radiates a warm & pleasant vibe.
Ambient lighting to lit up the space along with task fixtures specifically for working at a computer, writing, or reading works well.
Well cushioned chair with a backrest is a must for long hours of work/ study.
Tip:
- Concealed storage works well and gives a cleaner look. The space behind the door can have shallow shelves to line the books and other stationery.
MINIMALIST BATHROOM
Functionality, comfort and safety are the key features of a minimalistic bathroom. Keeping them in mind, a relaxing, energy efficient (please refer toEco-Conscious Sustainable Living for more details) and elegant bathroom can be designed with simplicity and practicality using clear, straight lines. Concrete, natural stone, waterproofed & polished wooden slabs are some good alternatives for the countertops and open shelves.
Lighting is very crucial in a bathroom. Recessed lights are excellent as task lights but an interesting wall light could be a game changer. (please refer to Styling with lights for more details)
For a minimalistic look, frameless or semi-framed shower screens could be used. Large mirrors fixed on walls make a huge impact.
Use of wall mounted basin or pedestal basin instead of vanities saves space. A pristine look can be achieved with sleek fittings and fixtures.
It is not necessary that all walls have to be tiled, just one feature wall can be tilted, for example the shower area leaving the rest walls plain. Oil based paints which are water resistant can be used for walls. Built in cabinets for storage in baths, below basin or behind doors or above the shower area work well for a small bath.
Tips:
- Tiled niches can be created in the shower area for toiletries instead of open shelves. Recessed storage behind mirrors can be a good option too.
- Adding plants can make the bathroom look more lively.
- Heating system can be placed concealed in lofts, also adding to storage and a clean appearance.
- Wall mounted faucets save space but are expensive.
MINIMALIST PASSAGEWAYS
Sleek and simple look can be achieved by adding statement flooring without a rug or carpet. Adding textures on the walls can make it look more interesting. A mirror adds another dimension to a space making it look wider and brighter.
Adequate lighting is important here, a row of lights along a long passage is again a great way to use the length of the passageway as an advantage. Consoles contribute dual functions; for elements/ decor styling & storage alternatives.
Adding picture frames to a long passageway can give you a homely feeling and make your passageway look more interesting. Metal accents, fresh flowers in vases bring in a lovely and soothing vibe.
Tips:
- A large wall can accommodate a large picture or painting but a narrow passageway can do with a series of small pictures framed in lighter tone.
- Keeping access points free of clutter and making sure not to keep side tables or baskets in the way.
Minimalism is the way of living and we need to adapt it gradually and consciously knowing our limited resources thereby lending a hand towards sustainable living.
