What material to use for flooring? Which kind of wall covering to go for? Will it be in my budget and as per my tastes? Which ones are sustainable?

All these questions cross your mind when you are planning to do up your home, office etc. Here are some Eco-friendly and sustainable suggestions that will add durability, texture, warmth, charm and fun element to any space you wish to create.

Eco-friendly, Sustainable Wall / Floor coverings

Cork Sheets:

  • Made from trees that are never cut down- it’s the outer bark which regrows.
  • Resistance to mould and mildew along with natural insulating properties.
  • A beautiful and durable way to provide warmth to a room; a good alternative to wood.

Natural wood veneers:  

  • Wood veneers provide aesthetics like natural solid wood with low cost.
  • Flexibility in designs. Each wood veneer sheet is unique as each tree is unique.
  • Low maintenance and long lasting.

Bamboo: 

  • It is harder than most hardwoods, hence is extremely durable if properly maintained.
  • Inexpensive bamboo flooring is susceptible to scratches and dings. 
  • Bamboo grass readily absorbs water hence not recommended for wet areas. 

Wooden panels:  

  • Low maintenance, easy to clean and anti-slip.
  • Although prone to scratches, it is strong, durable.
  • Although a perfect choice of flooring for cold climatic conditions wood panels, look good on walls and ceilings too.

 Sustainable and Recyclable Floorings

  • Wood laminate: It is a cheaper option than wood veneers, ample choices & recommended for wet areas.
  • Recycled timber: As the name suggests, it can be sourced and polished to make an eco-friendly wooden flooring choice for your interiors.
  • Vinyl flooring: This is another sustainable option available in form of sheets and tiles. Vinyl tiles are a more durable option & can be recycled to make new products.

Plant Derived Floor Coverings

  • Coir: It’s made from coconut husks, very durable and great choice for high traffic areas of your interior space.
  • Jute: It is recommended for low traffic areas, and looks great. It is pocket friendly choice.
  • Sisal: Popular for its rough & tough nature, sisal is low maintenance, highly durable, making it a good choice for flooring as it helps in improving the air quality of your home.
  • Seagrass: Easy to clean, durable & hard, beneficial for allergy free environment and a cheap option.

Eco Friendly Tile Wall / Floor Coverings

  • Ceramic tiles: These are high glaze tiles with variety of colours available, recommended for kitchen backsplash or bathrooms esp.
  • Terrazzo: A polished, smooth multi coloured tile made up of either marble, stone, glass chips mixed in cement with its own charm and beauty.
  • Mosaic: They are water proof, excellent for bath and kitchen. Since these tiles add colour, they are excellent for a feature wall.
  • Terracotta: Adds character & texture to a given place, though not advisable near saltwater areas.
  • Vitrified: Available in plain neutral colours, stone finish patterns and no glaze. They need to be sealed, easy to maintain and fine with saltwater areas.

Stone Wall & Floor Coverings

Natural stone wall & floor coverings are one of the eco-friendliest and sustainable, durable options that add beauty and elegance to your interiors as well as exteriors.

  • Natural stone: Highly durable with timeless beauty, although the sourcing and laying could be expensive.
  • Granite & Marble: These need professional installation to avoid cracking and a protective finish after laying to last forever.
  • Sandstone: Recommended for outdoors esp., low maintenance and gives an earthy, natural look.

Eco friendly, Sustainable Wall Finishes

  • Organic wallpapers: Healthy & eco-friendly; water-based printing inks, natural dyes, etc. They can add drama & mood to any room, with easy & quick installation.
  • Textured walls: Build character and interest to any room.
  • Zero or low VOC paints: Chemical free paints with low or no VOC’s, breathable & healthy, for e.g. water-based paints.

Recyclable wall / Floor coverings

  • Recycled Leather: Brings elegance, colour and texture to any given space. 
  • Recycled Paper tiles: Are durable, light weight and easy to install. 
  • Recycled Plastic tiles: Are highly durable and long lasting.

Eco-conscious Floor Covering

  • Linoleum: Linoleum sheets are manufactured from Linseed oil, mixed with other natural products. They are long lasting, anti-static & biodegradable.
  • Cement flooring:  It is strong, energy- efficient and low maintenance.
  • Natural rubber:  It has anti-slip properties and provides good noise insulation.
  • Clay plaster: It’s a mixture of clay and sand, a beautiful, non-toxic option for paint, easy application & can be used for walls or floors.
